What is Network Topology?


Network topology refers to the manner in which the links and nodes of a network are arranged to relate to each other.There are two categorized to network topology in which physical and logical. Physical network topology, as its name suggests, refers to the physical connections and interrelationships between nodes and networks, such as wires and cables, etc. Examples of physical network topology include star, mesh, tree, ring, point-to-point, circular, hybrid, and bus topology networks, each consisting of different configurations of nodes and links. Logical network topology is a bit more abstract, referring to the conceptual understanding of how and why a network is organized and how data moves through it. Examples of logical network topology include twisted-pair Ethernet, Which is classified as logical bus topology, and token ring, which is classified as a logical ring topology.

BUS Topology

The bus topology is designed in such a way that every computer and network device is connected by a single cable. The bus topology is also known as a backbone cable.The bus topology transmits data in only one direction and every device is connected by a single cable. The configuration of the bus topology is quite simple compared to other topologies.

Disadvantages of Bus Topology

  • In the bus topology, if the cable ever fails, the entire network fails.
  • It has a limited length of cable.
  • Network performance is reduced if network traffic is heavy or nodes are high.

STAR Topology

In STAR Topology all computers are connected to the same hub via a cable. This hub is the central node and all other nodes are connected to a central node. It uses a coaxial cable or RJ-45 cable to connect computers. Star topology is one of the most popular topologies in network implementations.

Advantages of Star Topology

  • It only affects the node that has failed, the rest of the nodes work smoothly.

  • This is easy to troubleshoot.

Disadvantages of Star Topology

  • It is very expensive to use.
  • If the hub ever fails, the entire network is shut down because all nodes depend on the hub.

RING Topology

This is called a ring topology because it forms a ring, because each computer is connected to another computer, the last one of which is connected to the first. There are exactly two neighbors for each device. The ring topology is just like a topology. It always has data flowing in one direction, that is, it is unidirectional. It has no endpoint, that is, each node from the other node. Is connected and there is no endpoint.

MESH Topology

Mesh technology is a arrangement of networks in which computers are connected to each other through various redundant connections.There are many paths from one computer to another.It does not have a switch, hub, or any central computer that serves as the central point of communication.This is an example of an Internet mesh topology.

Advantages of Mesh Topology

  • In Mesh Topology, communication between nodes is very fast.MESH Topology
  • The defect in this is very easily diagnosed.
  • It provides security and privacy.
  • Each connection carries its own data load
  • It is strong.

Disadvantages of Mesh Topology

  • The cost of cabling is very high in this.
  • It requires bulk wiring.
  • Installation and configuration are very difficult in Mesh topology.

TREE Topology

The tree topology simply combines the characteristics of the bus topology and the star topology. The three topology has a root node and all other nodes are connected by making it a hierarchy. Hence it is also called hierarchical topology.

Advantages of Tree topology

  • In this, error detection and error correction is very easy.
  • It never affects the entire network if there is a breakdown in one station.

Disadvantages of Tree Topology

  • If the central hub fails, the network also fails.
  • It is very expensive.

HYBRID Topology

It is a combination of two or more topologies.It consists of a connection between different links and nodes to transfer data.
